Something’s not quite right here…

Friday, April 29th, 2005

So, all the servers came up fine which is unsual during the Friday maintenance. No music to delete. No movies to remove. No porn to put ‘orrible little kids on detention for. Maybe’s they’re all starting to realise that spending Monday – Thursday finding ways of downloading content onto the systems only for it to be wiped on Friday isn’t such a good idea.
Then, after 3 hours of coding this afternoon, the updated helpdesk integrated with the Intranet works fine. Hasn’t crashed yet, at least. Which is worrying since I’ve got ISS (I know, I know) running the NTLM authentication before querying a MySQL database on a separate system, before redirecting through to the relevant internal webserver based on the user logged in. Is actually quicker than when the whole thing ran off ISS, but that’s hardly a surprise.
And, with a May Bank Holiday weekend nearly here, the sun is still shining, the weather forecast is looking good, and the chance of a good soaking so traditional on holiday weekends seems pretty slim.

Something’s gotta give somewhere!

And now a quick news feed…

See if you can work out which was the true story from the BBC website:

BBC Obvious

Why oh why?

The MG ZR is basically a Rover 25 with a body-kit. Albeit, slightly faster (we’re still not gonna trouble 0-60 times here) and still not overly impressive to look at (though in comparison to a slug, we’re onto a winner) but why the hell do you then put on a full body-kit with wide wheel arches, a spoiler even someone of my size could go surfing on, and wheels that look like they’ve come out of a Meccano set? The only saving grace for the owner is that he’s tinted the windows so no-one recognises him. Think I’ll just sit by my office window so I can mock the poor owner when they return and throw stuff at them.

I’m sure I could think of better things to waste a couple of thousand pounds on.

Who said reading bash wasn’t educational?

Bonz: Light bulbs are not actually “light bulbs” but dark absorbers. When you turn them on, they suck the dark out of the room. You can prove this by holding your hand under a “light bulb”. The dark will stack up under your hand where its path to the absorber is blocked by your hand. When they quit working and turn a dark color, it’s not because they burnt out, it’s because they’re full.

You guys over the pond better get ready!

Tickets booked for the end of May, so the US better watch out!
Will probably end up being deported, assuming I manage to sweet talk my way past the immigration, but the alternative was to sit in rainy Newcastle in front of a computer screen breaking the network wanting to be elsewhere. Reckon flying out to sunny Minnesota is probably the best bet. Not quite sure which one would end up getting me into more trouble, but certainly should be fun to give it a go.

I swear if I get asked “Do you want fries with that?” in a restaurant I’ll crease up laughing though!

And for my next trick…

The trouble now is: what do I next weekend?

Having travelled to London late Friday, Eurostar out to Paris at 6.30a.m Saturday morning to surprise someone I didn’t know would turn up in order to wander around in the sunshine, have lunch in the gardens of Sacre Cour, before sampling the delights of Paris on an evening; followed by a return to London first-thing Sunday morning to spend the day wandering around in even more sunshine, including lying on the banks of the River Thames in the shadow of the London Eye before returning back into Durham at 12.30a.m, I need something even more outrageous for next time!

What went from being the most stupidest thing I’ve ever done thankfully become the most amazing thing I’ve ever done. And what better way to surprise someone than in the heart of Paris under the gaze of the Eiffel Tower? Maybes the Parisienne taxi wasn’t such a great idea (I’d only recommend a taxi ride in Paris if you have a serious death wish), but you either get busy living or get busy dying!

MacBackpackers 7-day grand tour of Scotland

The mob in it's entirety!

Well, after one hell of a 7 day trip, worked sucked. All you other guys seemed to be be off elsewhere touring, which made getting up at 7a.m to fight through the morning rush-hour even more fun. At least Tanya was probably doing the same thing, and thanks Gra – was expecting an e-mail first thing letting me know you were waiting to head for your Ireland tour…

But, memories! All the photos put on here are simply to stir yours. Look and laugh through your own photos. These are just a selection of mine that I like. Click on each of the smaller photos for a larger image. These are still scaled down to speed things up and stop the website falling over, so e-mail me if you desperately want any full-sized images. Also, you will need to click one the ‘More’ button to see each day’s photos to stop them all loading on the front page!

Am waiting for Gra to stop touring and get a load of his photos through – they’ll go straight up on here as and when, and all you other guys with photos, send them through! Especially those of people as I’m crap at people photos – they always blur :-(

But, hope everyone else enjoyed the tour as much as I did! See you all again in a year up on the Isle of Skye to dip your face in the stream by Cullin View to make sure we never look like ageing a year ;-)
